Neurosurgery, MVA and a technicolour dreamcoat

Ok, so I've been doing neurosurgery.

It is pretty cool. It can get very crowded in the theatre (like gynae)....like "5mm to the right and you will be sitting on the surgeons lap". And nobody wants that to happen. The other night there were quite a few medical students watching as well. I was assisting and did my best to make sure (without contorting my body too much or making it difficult for me to assist) that they could see, because I know from experience how frustrating it is not being able to see things (I am not short, I am exactly average height thankyouverymuch).

I start ICU this week. I had put down to do general ICU, but then got told this week I was doing cardiothoracic surgery, and then on Friday that I was with an anaesthetist who does cardiothoracic cases (with some ICU crossover). Who knows? Frankly, I don't care what I do as long as I learn something of the "useful for being a doctor variety", not the "personal growth cause I had such a crap experience variety". There are so many things I would like to do and see, and not enough time, unless I want to spend 10 years doing medical school (erm, no thanks, its been a long enough road).

Like how paediatrics and OBGYN didn't make me any more of an enthusiast for smoking while pregant, and how ED and psychiatry didn't make me any more of an enthusiast for drugs (of the non-legal kind), neurosurgery didn't make me any more enthused about dangerous driving, drink driving or motorbikes without helmets. (Or motorbikes in general. I once got an exhaust burn on my ankle on a scooter, which I still have a scar from, but in the scheme of things it is pretty trivial).

Speaking of traffic, I had a rather bizarre and surreal experience on the weekend, which could have ended a LOT worse than it did....a medical student who I met in emergency the other week when Best Neurosurgeon Evah and I (ok, just him, with me tagging along) were there seeing a patient very kindly took me for a drive around Elective City surrounds on Saturday. A drive that was interrupted by what was (physically) a minor prang when another motorist was on the wrong side of the road (yes, win!!) We pulled over, and she got out of the car. Anyway, this guy went off (emotionally that is, not directionally). He started having a real go at here, pushed her out of the way and grabbed her car keys from the ignition and held them out of her reach. Passersby started to stop and watch and a few people (thankyouthankyou) came forward to try and help (while in the background I could see at least one person dialing the carabinieri). I am not entirely sure what was said (by this stage my friend and I were standing away from the action, well away) but punches were thrown.

A fracas ensued which can only be described as a mini riot (though I have seen worse at Kings Cross station I have to admit), with about 4 people punching each other. The guy who collided with us ended having a tooth knocked loose (after which he dropped the keys). We almost kissed the cops feet when they arrived. Hooray for the law and men in blue! (And kind passersby). Not so much for violent unstable motorists who drive on the wrong side of the road.

Running through my head was "I knew I should have cancelled and just had a nap". Anyway, it seems to have been sorted out now. Also quite trivial (once it was sorted off and violent unstable motorist who drives on the wrong side of the road was taken away), but very surreal. (Yes, I realise how much worse it could have been, and am thankful).

Life experiences "involved in mini riot" check. Now just to do that camel safari...

Currently listening to: Soundtrack - Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat. Actually, more like singing out aloud to (and possibly with some actions involved).

If my life were important I
Would ask will I live or die
But I know the answers lie
Far from this world (Close every door)

It was red and yellow and green and brown
And scarlet and black and ocher and peach
And ruby and olive and violet and fawn
And lilac and gold and chocolate and mauve
And cream and crimson and silver and rose
And azure and lemon and russet and grey
And purple and white and pink and orange
And red and yellow and green and brown
Scarlet and black and ocher and peach
And ruby and olive and violet and fawn
And lilac and gold and chocolate and mauve
And cream and crimson and silver and rose
And azure and lemon and russet and grey
And purple and white and pink and orange
And blue (Joseph's coat)

May I return to the beginning
The light is dimming, and the dream is too
The world and I, we are still waiting
Still hesitating
Any dream will do (Any Dream will do).

Why yes I do occasionally break into song.

Babywatch update:
Medical blogerati member Fat Doctor welcomed her second child of the weekend, to be known as "Daughter". Congratulations FD!

Phew, happy to hear you got away from that one unscathed. I would hate to swap insurance and registration details with that guy! (I’m presuming your friend didn’t have to?)

I was also happy....there were police statements made but I am not sure what happened with the insurance. I choose to dwell on the awesomeness of the icecream we had after it was all over instead....(and be glad that a need for Best Neurosurgeon Evah to operate on either of us didn't arise).
My mother had a herniated C7 after a front on car crash we had when I was 13 (again, someone on the wrong side of the road...honestly it was them!!) so was very thankful that it was superficial car damage only.
